š¤ Google left out the most important number
Google has now rolled out Generative AI Performance Reports globally inside Search Console. For the first time, site owners can see AI Overview and AI Mode impressions separated from traditional search performance, broken down by page, country, device and date.
Thatās a meaningful improvement because AI visibility is finally measurable inside Googleās own reporting instead of being buried inside blended search data.
The problem is that the report still leaves out the two numbers that would turn visibility into insight.
Impressions tell you something happened. They donāt tell you why.
The new report currently omits both query-level data and click data.
That means a page can suddenly receive thousands of AI impressions without revealing:
Which question triggered those impressions.
Whether any of those impressions produced meaningful traffic.
Without those two pieces, impression growth is best treated as an early signal rather than a performance metric.
Reconstruct the missing context yourself
Until Google fills those gaps, the next best approach is to combine the report with information you already have.
If a page suddenly gains AI impressions, start by looking at what that page was designed to answer. Most pages target a small cluster of closely related questions, making it possible to narrow down the likely trigger by checking what changed during the same period, whether that was a content update, seasonal demand or a competitor entering the space.
Then look beyond Search Console.
Because clicks arenāt reported, branded search demand and direct traffic become useful proxy signals. If AI impressions rise and branded searches or direct visits begin increasing around the same time, thereās a reasonable case that those citations are creating downstream awareness even if Google never attributes the click directly.
Neither method is perfect.
Together, they produce a much clearer picture than impression counts alone.
Treat Search Console as one input, not the whole system
The new report answers an important question.
āAm I appearing in AI experiences?ā
It doesnāt answer the next one.
āIs that visibility actually creating business value?ā
Thatās why many teams are starting to combine Googleās reporting with broader AI visibility tracking. AirOpsā State of AEO 2026 expands beyond impressions by tracking signals such as citation rate, mention rate, share of voice, sentiment and source attribution, giving brands a framework for measuring AI visibility beyond what Search Console currently exposes. You can get the State of AEO Report.
Google has finally shown where AI visibility begins.
The missing query and click data mean itās still up to marketers to figure out what those impressions are actually worth.
š AI is reshaping ads, search and measurement
AI platforms are moving beyond answering questions and deeper into advertising infrastructure. This weekās updates span conversion optimization, audience competition, automated ad creative, and even how marketers should interpret Search Console data.
The Breakdown:
1. ChatGPT Ads gets serious about conversions - ChatGPT Ads added oCPC campaigns, attribution parameters, new measurement integrations, and product carousel testing. It is also expanding into Brazil and Mexico, while Automatic Advanced Matching becomes default.
2. ChatGPT leads, but Gemini is gaining - ChatGPT remains the preferred AI tool among 33.7% of recent U.S. generative AI users. Gemini sits at 18.2%, but gained 6.8 percentage points since February.
3. Google starts writing Shopping ad copy - Google is testing AI-generated descriptions directly inside Shopping ads. Similar experiments have already appeared across sponsored text ads and product descriptions, suggesting broader automation of how ads are presented.
4. AI Mode is changing Search Console data - Queries like āyesā and āyes, pricingā are not necessarily meaningless noise. Google records AI Mode follow-up responses as new searches, including their own impressions, clicks, and ranking data.
AI is becoming part of the advertising and search infrastructure itself, influencing how campaigns optimize, how products are presented, where audiences concentrate, and even what marketers see inside their measurement tools.
